Open mics and songwriter nights on the Front Range

At an open mic or a songwriter night, you bring your own act and play a short set on a stage that changes hands all night. You need a song or two you can finish, and you need to get there by the signup time.

Schedules change. Confirm with the venue or host before you go.

How open mics work

What gets played

Each act gets two or three songs or about ten minutes, whichever comes first. Most open mics welcome covers, songwriter nights want original songs, and a few run in the round, with writers taking turns. At the mixed open mics, poets and comics share the list.

How signup works

Most keep a list at the door, and some of the bigger ones take signups online ahead of time. The popular lists fill before the music starts, so get there by the signup time, which is often earlier than the start time.

How a set goes

The host calls you up, the sound person checks that your mic and instrument are coming through, and you play your songs with a sentence or two of talk between them. Watch the host for the signal to wrap up.

Habits worth knowing

  • Tune before you get on stage, so you have time for your last song.
  • Keep the talk between songs shorter than the songs.
  • Stay for the acts after yours.
  • Thank the host and the sound person by name on your way off.

What each act needs

  • 1 to 2, first-timer friendly Your first time on any stage is fine, and so is playing basic chords or a groove and following along.
  • 3, middle You hold your part, take a solo or a verse, and know the common tunes.
  • 4 to 5, experienced People expect you to know the tunes by name and keep up, and working pros sit in.

All five levels, defined

Singer-songwriters

1 to 2, first-timer friendly
You have two finished songs you can play from memory, you're tuned before your name is called, and if a verse falls out you start it over without apologizing.
3, middle
You have a tight ten minutes with the intros planned, you can keep playing a chord until lost words come back, and you can tell which of your songs fits the crowd.
4 to 5, experienced
You can stretch or cut your set on the host's signal, talk between songs without eating into your time, and debut a brand-new song with no warm-up.

We finish the songs, time the set, and rehearse what to do when something goes wrong. Songwriting lessons

Solo instrumentalists

1 to 2, first-timer friendly
You have one piece arranged to stand on its own, a pickup or mic setup you've tested, and you nod instead of apologizing when a note goes wrong.
3, middle
You have a short set with contrast between the pieces, you can loop the last section to cover a fumble, and your introductions help a bar crowd follow instrumental music.
4 to 5, experienced
You can set up tunings and effects in seconds, improvise a bridge when your memory blanks, and keep a crowd's attention with no words at all.

Inquire about a good teacher for you, and I'll recommend someone if I know one.

Duos and small bands

1 to 2, first-timer friendly
You have two rehearsed songs, one tuner you share, and a setup you can finish in two minutes.
3, middle
You have three songs with dynamics, endings you can cue by eye when the host is rushing the list, and a plan for who talks between songs.
4 to 5, experienced
You can check your sound one instrument at a time, run backing tracks from your own device at a volume you've tested, and drop a song on the fly when the slot gets shorter.

Inquire about a good teacher for you, and I'll recommend someone if I know one.

Walk in ready.

In a lesson or two before your first jam, we cover the songs you'll play and how to fit them into ten minutes, how the signup works, and how a set goes. Once you're my student, I'll help you pick the right jam, and I'll be there.

Book a lesson How a first jam goes

$75 an hour, in your home or on Zoom. You pay after the lesson.
